Our History
Over 39 years of HELP
Project HELP, Inc. is a private nonprofit organization that has grown and adapted to meet the evolving needs of the community since its founding in 1986. Through collaboration and partnerships, Project HELP continues to provide comprehensive support services to individuals and families in crisis, helping them find hope, healing, and a path forward.
1986
Project HELP, Inc. was founded.
Beth Knake led the Crisis Hotline at the David Lawrence Center, where services were initially available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Recognizing that survivors need support at all hours, Beth envisioned a helpline that would be accessible 24/7. With that vision, she took the bold step of transforming the hotline into an independent, community-based nonprofit—marking the beginning of Project HELP’s journey.

Beth worked tirelessly alongside the State of Florida and numerous statewide Committees of Action, playing a pivotal role in strengthening survivor services across the state. She was also a founding force behind the creation of the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence, leaving a lasting legacy of advocacy, access, and support for survivors.
1995
Become one of Florida's first certified Rape Crisis Centers
The Florida Council Against Sexual Violence serves as the State Certifying Agency for all rape crisis centers across Florida. Project HELP was among the first rape crisis centers in the state to receive certification, earning this distinction in August 1995.
2010
Opened our in house Forensic Exam facility
In 2010, Project HELP worked diligently to bring a forensic rape exam facility in-house, ensuring survivors could receive comprehensive, trauma-informed care in a single, safe location.
Today, Project HELP’s multidisciplinary team includes a Medical Director, three Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), an Executive Director, two Licensed Mental Health Counselors, six Victim Advocates, including bilingual advocates fluent in Spanish, and up to 20 trained volunteers.
Every staff member, volunteer, and team participant is required to complete state certification, including 30 hours of Advocacy Core Training, 16 hours of on-the-job training, and six hours of continuing education each year.
2026
Our 40th Year Anniversary
In 2026, Project HELP proudly celebrates its 40th year of service to survivors and our community. For four decades, Project HELP has remained committed to providing compassionate, trauma-informed support, advocacy, and education for those impacted by sexual violence.
This milestone year honors the strength of survivors, the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the community partners who have stood with us since the beginning. As we reflect on 40 years of impact, we also look ahead with renewed purpose—continuing to grow, adapt, and advocate for a future where every survivor is heard, supported, and empowered.
