Program
Goals

The goal of the Sexual Assault Forensic Program is to ensure survivors of sexual assault receive immediate, compassionate, and trauma-informed medical and advocacy support, while preserving their rights, choices, and dignity. The program removes financial and procedural barriers to care and ensures survivors have access to forensic exams, advocacy, and ongoing support, regardless of whether they choose to report to law enforcement.

We are here to provide the support you need. Here are some frequently asked questions from individuals affected by crime that may be helpful. For specific questions please call our office line if during office hours or the 24/7 Crisis HELPline 239-262-7227.

I was just sexually assaulted. What do I do?

If you have just been sexually assaulted, your safety is the most important thing. Go somewhere safe, seek medical care if needed and contact Project HELP’s 24/7 Crisis Helpline to speak with a trained, confidential advocate. Try to preserve evidence if possible, and remember—it is not your fault. Help and support are available anytime.

What is a forensic (rape kit) exam? Does it cost anything?

A forensic exam, or rape kit, is a medical exam after a sexual assault. It includes a physical exam, evidence collection, and medical care like STI testing, injury treatment, and emergency contraception.

Often compared to a Pap smear, it is more thorough. Trained SANEs carefully collect evidence, document injuries, and provide compassionate, trauma-informed support.

The exam is FREE for survivors, and you do not have to pay for it along with any of our other services.

Who will be preforming my Forensic Exam?
What is a SANE Nurse?

Your forensic exam will be conducted by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).

A SANE is a registered nurse with specialized training to care for sexual assault survivors. They are experts in collecting forensic evidence safely and accurately, providing medical treatment, and addressing your physical and emotional needs. SANEs work with advocates to support you throughout the process, answer your questions, and connect you with resources for recovery and healing.

Do I have to report to Law Enforcement to get a forensic exam?

What if I don’t remember everything that happened?

What if I’m under 18—does anyone have to be notified?

No. You can receive a forensic exam and medical care without reporting to law enforcement. You have the right to decide if, when, or how you want to involve the police. Our trained advocates can guide you through your options.

It’s common to have gaps in memory after a traumatic event. You can still receive a forensic exam and support. Trained SANE Nurses and advocates will help you through the process, and you can provide as much or as little information as you feel comfortable sharing.

Minors can still access a forensic exam and crisis support, though it requires a parent or guardian consent due to state law. Advocates can explain your options and help you get the care and support you need while keeping you safe and informed.

Can I have someone I trust with me during the exam?

Yes, you may bring a support person with you. However, because of the sensitive nature of the forensic exam, your support person will need to stay in the waiting area once the exam begins. They can be with you before and after to provide comfort and support.

How long does a forensic exam take?

A forensic exam usually takes 1-3 hours, depending on the care and evidence collection needed. Your SANE nurse will work at a pace that is comfortable for you, allowing breaks and explaining each step along the way.

Can you help me file a police report or protective order?

Yes. Our advocates can help you understand your options and provide support when reporting to law enforcement. Our advocates based in the State Attorney’s Office can also assist with filing an Injunction for Protection (IFP). We respect your choices and are here to support you throughout the process.

Forensic Exam Facility

Located within the Project HELP building, the Sexual Assault Forensic Facility provides a safe and confidential environment for survivors to receive forensic exams following a sexual assault. By offering services outside of a traditional hospital or clinic, the facility helps prevent the trauma of re-victimization often associated with emergency care settings.

The facility is managed by Project HELP with the guidance of a Medical Director, who oversees protocols and supervises the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs). Our SANEs are state-trained professionals skilled in collecting forensic evidence necessary for investigations, with all evidence processed through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
